 Under the umbrella of swinging is what they call soft swap and full swap.

Soft swap means that you only engage in sexual contact with your partner. Others might watch or have sex in the same room but no touching. Full swap means that you and your partner are looking to have sex with other people.

Of course life is never binary so there is plenty of middle ground to be negotiated between a couple *before* they jump into a swinging situation.

 Soft swap involves looking but no sex. Swinging is an umbrella term to include soft swap and swapping partners for sex.
