Beautiful Boxer

I watched the movie Beautiful Boxer last night. It's a biography of Parinya Charoenphol, aka Nong Thoom/Toom/Tum (played by professional kickboxer Asanee Suwan), a young Thai katoey who was born a boy, but knew since childhood that in her heart she was a girl. After a period spent as a Buddhist monk, she entered training in muay thai (Thai kickboxing), and began competing professionally in February 1998, using her earnings to support her parents and raise money to pay for her sex reassignment surgery, eventually becoming the national champion. She retired from competition and underwent her sex reassignment surgery in 1999, later working as an actress and model. She returned to competition in February 2006, and is now an instructor at Nong Tum Fairtex Gym in Pattaya, with plans to open a training camp in Hua Hin later this year.

It's a strange juxtaposition that this is a beautiful, heartwarming film about a very brutal sport, just as it's a strange juxtaposition that the protagonist is a gentle, sensitive, and very feminine person, yet participating, and even dominating, in this sport. The film is shot in various parts of Thailand, showing beautiful landscapes and people, as well as one part taking place in Japan. Unfortunately, I watched it without subtitles, and as the dialogue is in a mix of English, Thai, and Japanese, I couldn't understand all of it. Still, it's a very good movie, and I highly recommend it. I hope that seeing it will give people a better understanding of transgenders, that she is not a man dressed in women's clothing, but a woman dressed in a man's body who only wishes to be her true self.

If you're not interested in the story or the lesson, though, the film also offers plenty of action, as several of Nong Thoom's fights are re-enacted, in all the gory detail. Plus there are several beautiful women in the film, including Miss Thailand 1992, Orn-Anong Panyawong, as Nong Thoom's mother. Nong Thoom herself, who IMO is very beautiful, makes a cameo appearance as a beautician who gives her young self some hormone supplements. Just remember that it's a biography, not an action film, and has plenty of introspective moments too, and a bit of a slow pace.
