I'd rather walk!

One time a couple of years ago I set out to walk 13 miles to the nearest town.

I'd made arrangements the day before, for a guy who lived a couple of miles from me to pick me up and drive me to a garage, where my truck was ready to be taken home. Guess what? The S.O.B. never showed up. When I called his house, the phone just rang off the hook, and the guy didn't have a cell, or at least I didn't have the number for his cell.

I'd taken the truck in to the garage the day before to have it hooked up to the computer for the smog test that the state of California demands be done every two years on all vehicles newer than 1972. The truck was an old 1978, 1/2 ton Datsun that only had 52,000 miles on it. It was a truck I'd bought new in L.A. in 1978, and it still ran perfectly... but it DIDN'T pass the smog test! It needed some small thing done to it to make it pass.

I left the truck at the garage and hitched a ride to the guard station near my home with a Marine who was stationed at the 29 Palms Marine Corps base, and then I trudged the three miles through the desert to my place. It was November when this went down, so the weather was nice and cool, and walking was actually very pleasant.

Early the next morning I called the garage, and was told my truck was ready to go, and to please come and get it because they were so busy at the garage they didn't have any place to park it over the weekend if I didn't pick it up that day.

I told the girl who took my call, that I'd be there one way or the other to get my truck.

The walk back to my place the evening before from the guard station had been so pleasant, and the weather was so good, that I decided to heck with trying to get a ride the 13 miles into town, I'd walk it.

I've always been a walker and even though I was 70 at this time, I still did a lot of walking through the desert.

I set out to town with a canteen of fresh water, wearing shorts, a light shirt, a broad brimmed straw hat and a pair of my most comfortable shoes.

I was off the sand trail, and on the black-topped road leading into town when the "buddy" who was SUPPOSED to pick me up and drive me to the garage to get my truck, came driving down the road FROM TOWN. He saw me, and pulled his van over on the opposite side of the road. I walked over to him, and when he leaned out the driver's window, the smell of booze was so strong it almost knocked me over.

"I was juuusst on tthe way to fetch youuu," he said. It was obvious to me he was too drunk to drive, and I certainly wasn't gonna' get in the van with him...

"I'd rather walk," I said, and abruptly turned away from him and set out to town on foot, leaving him staring after me.

Two weeks later he was stopped at a sheriff's checkpoint and arrested for DUI.

I actually only needed to walk 8 miles. I'd forgotten there was a little bus that drove up and down a main blacktop the last 5 miles, and stopped right in front of the garage where my truck was parked. The bus cost me fifty cents.

To get my truck out, I paid $160.00 and change.

I wouldn't do it in July when the temp. in the shade is usually over 110. Transportation out here is always a problem... There's a taxi service now, but they won't go on dirt trails.

I'm actually in better physical shape now at 76 the I was at 70 because I've been watching what I eat, and take my teeth out at 4 in the afternoon to keep from eating... My friends find THAT hilarious but it WORKS for me, lol.. love you silky skin!! xxxdavid
