LIFE IN THE BIG CITY

Life in the big city

I lived in the Los Angeles area for about twenty years before the city changed so much around me that the pressure of that flow of change forced me out.

I owned one house in THAT area when I was married for a brief time. It was in Sherman Oaks, and it was a disaster. It had a small swimming pool in the tiny back yard that had been built on compacted earth that hadn't been compacted thoroughly, and the swimming pool kept losing its water in hairline cracks no contractor seemed able to fix for any length of time.

Every counter in the kitchen was built for people who must have been no taller than 5 feet 7, because at over 6 feet 2, I always got a backache when I wanted to even boil an egg.

As strange as it may seem to you people who are not into animals, especially dogs, the thing I missed most about living in Los Angeles was the absence of a companion. Sure, people in the city have dogs, but in my opinion the city is no place for a dog, at least the type of raw-boned ranch dogs that I love the most-- and the sort of dogs I grew up with as a .

When I first bought this place on the high Mojave desert, I made the mistake of letting my first two dogs, a male mixed-terrier breed, and a pure-bred malamute, mate. For a couple of years I had seven dogs. It was a stupid mistake on my part. After that fiasco I always made sure the dogs who lived with me were spade and neutered.

I've lived in this house on the high desert now for 36 years, and during all those years I've had dogs around me. They've all been dogs that have come to me... Either they've been given to me by people, or they've been abandoned, and found their way to me on the open desert, and I've taken them in.

All my dogs except the lone one I have now (an old purebred border collie), have been tough characters. They've never worn collars, and never been restricted. Where I live with no one living anywhere around me, my dogs never needed to be kept from occasionally hunting on the acres near mine. At last count I've had 13 of these precious friends live and die here. The death of everyone of them has been with me, by their sides, as they breathed their last.

I wish their lifespans had all been much longer. I remember them all with the same beautiful memories that old men have of all the precious things that their lives have contained.

Have you lived with animals as friends during your life? Or, do you dislike animals around you?

I bet after you retire and get settled more permanently, HeartCollector, you'll bond with the animals you "collect" tighter than you can imagine'

After I moved here and started getting my dogs one at a time, they became almost human in the way we bonded. Being with animals 24/7 changes their entire way of behaving compared to having to leave them (especially dogs), and go to work, or be gone for long periods.. Cats, not so much.

I have always had pets sonce I left home.
Dogs, cats, birds, rabits, a chinchilla at one point.
I passed this love on to my kids
My oldest son once gave up his holoween night searching for the home of a stray dog in the neighnorhood
At the time we already had two dogs and two cats so I did not want another dog
When we could not locate the owner my son turned to me ans said " Are you going to let one of gods creatures suffer out in tje cold?
He was about 7 at the time
We had three dogs for about 4 years....
    Her name became Starbright
I KNEW you had to be an animal lover, Ed.. and your son is following in your wonderful footsteps.. xoxo david

I had a boyfriend 25 years ago that had a Great Dane and I was hooked. I spent many years helping to rescue them, and had my heart broken many times when I lost them. Then 9 1/2 years ago I got my first 8 week-old Dane, and he is the best dog that ever lived. He'll be 9 in November and, despite crippling arthritis in his back legs and knees, he is happy and still puppyish at times. He's already lived years longer than the average Dane and I know I don't have long left with him...
Great Danes are such beautiful dogs, Hippiechick! It's such a pity their lives are so short. I've heard of smaller dogs living 20 and 21 years, but my mixed breeds have never made it past 17 years, and most of them leave me at 14 and 15...It's heartbreaking when they come to an end.

Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment...xoxo david
