LIGHTS OUT

Do you have a lot of power outages where you live?

Have you done anything special to prepare for those times the lights go out?

Where I live on the desert, this is the time of year when we lose power every few days.

When I first moved here in 1976, I couldn't believe how sorry the electrical infrastructure was. It seemed even when we had a mild windstorm the power would take off with the wind.

Our power went off this morning at 4:45 AM and was off until a little after 11 AM. About 7 hours.

I'd just made a pot of fresh coffee-- thankfully! I do love my morning cup of coffee.

After turning on an electrical lantern and putting on my LED head lamp so I could see what I was doing, I went outside and noticed we were having a very light sprinkle of rain. This was the first rain we've had since August 22, 2012...I was happy it was raining, because the temperature wouldn't hit over 105 by 9 or 10 as it usually does in mid-July. In fact, it only climbed to the mid-90's today.

Next, I called the Edison Power Company and found out lightning had struck some of the power company's equipment. The automatic voice said there was no available information about how long the power would be out...

"A long fuc----time," I mumbled to Raggedy Ann. We'd been through similar times before.

Fortunately, I'd bought a small HONDA generator about fifteen years ago. It contains an onboard computer able to regulate the speed of it's power output to the needs of the electrical devices plugged into it. By doing this it's consumption of gasoline is miniscule compared to other generators.

I'd just taken the generator from its storage compartment and added 3/4 of a gallon of gasoline to it, when M. drove through our gate. She'd been in 29 visiting a sick friend, and stayed there overnight...... When the outage hit, M. wanted to get home because she knew there was no telling how long the power would be out.

In a short time with us both working together, we had the generator humming, and a power cord inside the house that ran the refrigerator, some lights, two house exhaust fans, a small TV and our Coby DVR..

I knew with the summer heat many people who didn't have generators would end up having to throw out a lot of spoiled food.

Before I bought the Honda Generator I'd wasted a lot of food in previous outages..I can highly recommend Honda Generators, they're very well made, and when properly taken care of, and used in emergencies for brief periods, last a lifetime.

We get lots of power outages here but haven't in the past few years. Most people own a generator now. Hugs V
They're great little gadgets and save a lot of anguish when the power goes off...xoxodavid

I thought about your power going off when ours went! At least you had a big STORM. It seems here we barely need a trickle of water or a puff of wind for the power to go off... It sounds like your neighbor needs to buy a generator... All those power cords are dangerous...please be careful and watch your grandchildren around them too! xoxodavid

So you know that I blogged about the thunderstorm and my loss of power . yes early this morning ,my neighbour from across the way.. well they still do not have power so he asked if he could string together some extension cords to go from his place to my outdoor side of my houses electrical outlet so that he can keep the food in his fridge and freezer from going bad... so I now have I don't even know hoow many cords strung together from my place to his.
