Double checking bank and invoice statements

Double checking bank and invoice statements

Yesterday I needed to waste most of the day by traveling to one of the banks where I do business to find out what the heck a recurring payment WAS that has been on my bank statements four times.

As in keeping with those shysters that scam us in every way possible, the amount of the recurring payment wasn't very much. It was only $12.95 but I'd paid it four times.... Aside from some numbers and abbreviations, and a notation, "free shipping", there was no way for me to determine what IT was.

When the amount first appeared on my bank statement, the notation of "free shipping" had me at first glance believing it was related to something I'd bought on line, because I buy a lot of things on line. Because of that notation of "free shipping", I let that $12.95 slip through my attention four times....

Yesterday morning, I finally made up my mind to find out exactly what that small amount of green "they" were bleeding out of me WAS, and I traveled in person to my bank where the statement had come from--with the physical, printed out statement, in hand.

Well, it turned out I had been scammed out of a total of 4 times $12.95 or $51.80. The scam was pretty shrewd, and had something to do with giving credits on things ordered online, and supposedly giving free shipping on certain items. I didn't bother to go through all the legal mumble jumble relating to a box on my computer that I had checked by mistake that allowed this shyster company to take advantage of my not paying attention to what I'd checked.

I hadn't received anything for the $51.80 this scamster had ripped out of my wallet, but I DID end the bloodletting, and got an email of confirmation that the scam was ended.

I know many people who won't shop online because of the risk this sort of shady business creates when using online shopping.

Besides this stolen $51.80, I've been scammed out of other small sums in the past. But I still use the internet for ordering many things on line, and in total, I've saved much more of the hard to keep GREEN than I've been tricked into giving up...

What about you guys? Do you use your computer to order things online? If so have you been scammed?

Your approach to online shopping, and the savings you find there, is very similar to what I've also found... I check out the Value of the Day at Walmart each day and have scored some wonderful values through them... I've also found that Walmart has a very active Customer Service Dept. that I've used a few times when a package didn't arrive at my gate when it was supposed to. They've always corrected my problem within a day or two.

Amazon is another favorite site I use frequently... I've settled on using a simple debit card with--like you--only about 7 or 8 hundred dollars able to be lost should something evil happen... I also use a bank that is easy for me to get to in person. I've had my full of trying to straighten out things via the internet in another account I have with a big, distant bank.

Probably the biggest, and most important thing I do on this computer is to buy an Anti Virus program as a separate entity--this year I'm using Webroot--and that Anti Virus program has kept my computer free of Malware so far... Thank you very much for your always astute and interesting comments.. david

I do think I'm getting better at paying attention to the ordering process than I used to be... It's been a long time since the last scam got a little money from me.. It's just so magical for us living way out here on a sand trail to have things miraculously appear at our gate... I hope I live long enough to see a drone from Amazon appear in my yard and ring the gate bell with a package for me, lol.

I order things online, and I have been scammed, but not by the the online orders.
Buying things online is a lot of fun for me. I like Walmart and Amazon especially, and like to read the reviews from those who've previously bought what I'm looking at.... The times I have been scammed has been mostly my own fault for not thoroughly reading what I'm checking... thanks for your comment, Discrete W.....david

I've never ordered anything on the shopping channel, Smooth and Silky! But...I suppose anywhere we use a plastic card is a place that some crook is able to get us... I do love buying things and having them magically appear at my gate!! love, david

Shopping on line is like going back into the Wild West, where the only law is a drunken sheriff who's on the take....Still, because this area where we live is so far away from large stores, we do come out on top when the final score is added up... Thanks for the comment, Justskin!! Dave

If you see me in the real world, come say "Hi Justskin."

I always behave. Preferably not well.
