A Day In History

Today, I write this as we peacefully transfer power from one President to another.

I have read a friend's blog, and see a disturbing sign that this is for all "races." As far as I can see, we are still of ONE race, human.

We have many and varying ethnicities in this world, but we are still of ONE race, and as far as I know, we all bleed red.

I have yet to see science say that we can't exchange parts that the liver of a white man can't be used in the body of a black man, or the kidney from an Asian man can't be used in the body of a Mexican. Now, granted there are varying factors that have to go into the exchange, or replacement, of body parts, but I have yet to see science, let alone medical science, say that this can't be done.

As far as I am concerned, my point on race has been made.

Now, to the new President that was sworn in today (01/20/09). I believe you were voted in on a set of ideals that through the media, and Hollywood, over shadowed what you really plan on doing with my country. It was those ideals that got the young to turn out in droves to help you out.

Thankfully, I look past those ideals as "campaign rhetoric," and that the substance of what you plan on doing, at least in the near future, scares me. The fact that you want to spend $1 trillion, and yes that’s with a "TR", not a "B," or an "M," but a "TR," scares me. To spend that money you have to get it from somewhere, but the question is where.

In a time where the people of this country need to have less government, you plan on increasing it so many times over that I find it staggering.

So far, from what the media has reported, you plan on raising the taxes on things like gas to cigarettes (to be honest this tax I don't mind because I don't smoke) to income taxes.

The last one I really have a problem with. Our history has shown (and if I am wrong about this then someone show me where) that taxes and jobs go hand in hand. That, if you increase one side, the other must fall, and vice versa, in order to maintain the balance.

Now, if I am an employer and I don't want to pay an increased amount in payroll taxes, then I will cut jobs and make due with a product that is not as good as I would like to provide. This is not to say that the product would be so far off that it could not sell, but the quality would fall a little in the short term with a return to that level of quality in the long.

The bottom line for me is to maintain my profit regardless of what the government wants to take out of my pocket. So, if you wanted a penny increase in tax from me, I would have a 3 cent mark up to cover.

With that I now fit into the area where a majority of entrepreneurs fall and I have reached the upper echelon, I now have money and I am able to enjoy the fruits of my labors, but you want me to personally pay more.

Well, my fruits have been sustaining me pretty well, do I need more money? At this point probably not, but in order to keep my business profitable I would need to do something to keep my costs, or expenses, down.

In this, I would gladly take a little less profit just to keep my costs down, and to do this I would have to cut more jobs. So, if I can produce a product with less people and maintain a level of acceptable quality with a small increase in the time to produce that product just to not have to pay more in taxes, I'll do it.

Since, I am not an employer this is something that I shouldn't have to worry about, but I do worry about this because it would be my job he would have to consider cutting just to keep his business profitable. Isn't the statistic that 80% of the taxes are paid by the upper 4% of the US, and you want to increase the amount they pay? (If I have that particular statistic wrong, I give my apologies.)

So you can see why I am not jumping for joy over you saying that you want to spend $1 trillion to get our economy going.

One of the other things I have heard that you want to increase is government programs for the poor giving them more money. My only question to this is - if you increase the money you’re going to give the poor, then why would I try to get a job if you’re going to put a roof over my head and food to eat?

Anyways, to my new President, this is your day, savor and cherish it for as long as you live.

I also wish you all the success you can handle in all the things you encounter during your term, because for you, failure is not an option.

Evidently, you seem to not notice the several million jobs he created when he lowered taxes, but not everyone can see what’s really there and the fact that he inherited an economy that was going in the tank before 9/11 happened.

OH, and by the way, our current economic situation had nothing to do with our previous President. It had everything to do with companies backing their loans with non-existent money so when people couldn't pay, and they tried to collect on the derivatives, the companies got told "Sorry no money here" and those companies had to take their own losses for not getting the appropriate insurance for their loans, that’s how that happened.

So if you want to hate him, hate him all you want, but don't blame him for something he had no control over.

Then what part of his job didn't he do?
