Brace yourselves...

Okay, but seriously, no fighting please.

I think most of us here are prepared for the anticipated change to the blog main page. If you're not yet prepared, I'm here to inform you that we will soon be seeing a very different design on this page.

As I shared in the last blog post regarding this topic, we've been working on a two-column design for the new page. Basically, what we've been used to for so long is getting a huge make-over. Some will like it, others may not. We do hope most will like it, of course. I truly think this is a good design that takes into account a lot of members' concerns.

We've been paying very close attention to the issue of blog ranking and essentially how activity is displayed in the current blog design. It's quite cluttered, and the design behind the 'Most Active Blogs' list has inadvertently created a self-perpetuating leaderboard. Our aim with the upcoming design is not just to provide you all a fresh interface, but mostly to give you a somewhat customizable display of the all the blogs this community has to offer: blogs you currently read, and those you haven't yet found.

Aside from all the current lists you find on the page now (i.e. Active Recent Posts, Newly Created Blogs, Most Active Male Blogs, etc), you'll find links to Random Posts and Trending Posts. If you don't prefer the new look, there will be a link to Classic View as well, so you can view the blog page the way it looks now.

Click here to view a mockup of the new page:
Blog Page

You'll get to select which list appears on the blog page. One thing we're considering implementing is an "On/Off" toggle for the lists, so you can have as many or as few open as you wish at any given time.

Take a look and see if you feel this is a good design and if it reflects a majority of your suggestions and addresses your concerns.

Let's please keep this post devoid of bickering. We here really do not mind disagreements and understand the importance of these issues to you, but the fighting is not beneficial for any of us. People should be able to disagree and discuss their disagreements like adults, without spiraling into 'drama.'

I would like to have a way to keep going back on most recent blogs. Currently you can't really go back very far (i.e. 12 hours, 1 day, 1 week worth of new blogs). Is this something incorporated into the new design?

I do like the idea of being able to select from multiple lists....

just a few comments/observations on the groupings

1. First Grouping:
"Trending Posts" and "Random Posts" - I assume these are in part from the New test lists
"Recent Posts" and "Active Recent Posts" - I assume these are the existing unchanged "Most Active Recent Posts (one per blog)" and "Most Recent Posts".
Comment: It will now be easy to add other lists if ever required.

2. Second Grouping:
"Actively Watched Blogs" - is this a new list which is currently the three "featured" bloggers at the top of the page or will it be the existing "Active Blogs (by unique responses)"?
"Most Active Male Blogs" and "Newly Created Blogs" - I assume that these are the existing unchanged "Most Popular Male Blogs" and "Newly Created Blogs"
Comment: Only featuring "Most Active Male" Blogs? Should there not be a list of "Most Active Female Blogs", "Most Active Couple Blogs!, "Most Active TS/TV/TG Blogs". I assume that this/these "Most Active..." lists will not time decay.

Question:
Will the existing search feature be retained?

I like seeing the mock up - it helps a lot - thanks, and I hope my questions/comments help to clarify some things.

Something for everyone

Even the classic view for competition bloggers

One minor thing I'd really, really, really like please is that in the lists showing posts (particularly the list of most recent posts) the initial view limits it to one per blog.

If you click on "view more" then you get the full list, including all the multiple posts by individual bloggers.

That way the list won't get filled up with rubbish posted by people just after points, but you can still see all the posts if you want to

The mock up looks good....and it would appear that it should please almost everyone. I like it and am very happy with the proposed quick links all in one place....it actually seems as if A,F,F, IS listening. Thank you....for this post, your hard work, patience in the face of all the unpleasantness displayed by some on other posts and the speed with which this has been produced.

That's a definite improvement. It would be nice for the blog page to get some more occasional exposure on the homepage also. A lot of people complain about the blog pages being too hard to navigate to and things get stale without new viewers coming in sometimes.

Will the Beta Test Group be able to test the pages and links to make sure everything is in working order with as little bugs as possible before going live?

I like the way this looks and I like the flexibility it seems to be offering. Can't wait to give it a test drive.

Spoiler Alert!

Ned Stark (in the photo) was executed in front of his daughters, sparking off civil war.

Unfortunately I suspect your choice of photo might be unintentionally prophetic...

Bravo to the site (I can't believe I'm saying that!) for realizing that the stagnation of the present Blog Page is useful for nobody. I am looking forward to being able to peruse random blogs and decide for myself what I perceive to be a "quality" blog or not so "quality". It has been a hassle (ok, not such a big deal, but a hassle nonetheless) to find blogs that haven't been displayed on the main page. The ones that aren't displayed there tend to be more interesting than the ones that are... I suppose that is subjective, but in a lot of cases I think people have avoided the main page, simply because it is always the same.

Looks good. I just hope that when it goes live it isn't full of bugs and glitches like the new message center was and continues to be.

Hi Aryana, just a suggestion but i'd really like to see a link to the community blog and site support blog put onto the new blog main page for everyone to see there. Maybe this will get more members involved in site feedback which can only be a good thing. Also i think it would really help new members to the site if those links were there. I'd also like to see community blog and site support blog links on the site homepage aswel as the blog main page too.
