Men's Bodies

We don't hear about it very often, but many men are dissatisfied with their bodies. They have what's popularly called "The Adonis Complex," "bigorexia," and muscle dysmorphia. They believe they should be bigger, stronger, leaner, and more muscular, striving for some unattainable ideal. They work out excessively and take supplements and steroids, in order to achieve what they think is a he-man ideal.

To top things off, even though men often have low self-esteem because of their body image, they're taught that they shouldn't be concerned with their appearance or talk about it. Men learn that only women need to be concerned with looking good.

I'm curious whether men's assessment of the ideal muscularity is in line with what women expect from men. This poll might end up making men feel even worse about their bodies, but it's possible that it might make them feel better about themselves.

Women, which body do you find most attractive? Men, which body would you ideally like to have? (Ideally, I would put all choices on a separate line, but polls only have 10 available lines, so 5 and 6 are lumped together.)
I'm a woman who prefers Type 1
I'm a woman who prefers Type 2
I'm a woman who prefers Type 3
I'm a woman who prefers Type 4
I'm a woman who prefers Type 5 or 6
I'm a man who prefers Type 1
I'm a man who prefers Type 2
I'm a man who prefers Type 3
I'm a man who prefers Type 4
I'm a man who prefers Type 5 or 6

Hmm, firstly I think that men too suffer from unrealistic expectations and I have seen, firsthand, some guys who put themselves through insane workout regimens and use steroids in the neverending quest for the "perfect body".

Personally, I am humble but not suffering from low self-esteem. BUt, I was a VERY fat kid growing up and I think that probably causes me to want to stay in decent shape.
Your picture looks like exactly what I imagine guys strive for, by going to the gym. When you were fat as a child, were you more concerned with losing weight and becoming smaller or transforming weight to muscle and staying big?

Very interesting. It is an education to cruise these pages.

You gave this some really good thought. And, presented your results so well.

As for me, at this age, weight control is very important since I want to avoid the belly over the belt thing.

But, as with both genders, eating healthy on a regular basis is such a long list of choices over and over. To stay on the path requires focus & a lot of viewing in front of a long mirror.

Turning desires into action. Daily.

Good poll, as usual, very informative.

Now I feel inferior. Not really, I just had to say that.

Good to see you posting again.

Interesting poll. I was surpised( as usual) by the number of women voting for 5&6. Here's my personal experience. A year and a half ago, I changed my life . One day I got up and realized that my clothes didn't fit anymore. I had to take scissors and make cuts in the top of my jeans to make them fit. I said to myself... "that's it"! "I'm not buying bigger clothes, I'm gonna' get in better shape".I didn't go crazy with it, gradually worked into exercise, changed my diet by eating healthier. After 8 months I had shed 30 lbs. that I didn't need to be carrying around. I feel a lot better both in body and mind.
And yes you guessed it, I still workout trying to look something like # 1, LOL!

Just another day in Paradise!

I'm actually more surprised at the variety of choices that the men picked. The women's choices are basically in line with what I thought would happen. I don't think it's just a myth that women prefer bigger guys over smaller ones. So it kind of surprises me that so many guys are picking Number 1 and Number 4. Going by this poll, the "bigorexia" and "Adonis Complex" problems clearly aren't affecting a large percentage of men, thankfully.

On the other hand, I probably skewed the poll results by writing what I did about the problems that guys have with body image. If I hadn't stated that it's a problem for guys to dream unrealistically of being giant hunks of muscle, maybe more of you would've picked Number 3.

I think you may have skewed the results with your writing. I myself took #3 as I try to always at least be honest with my self.

Here's a tentative conclusion:

75% of women prefer men with an "average" to larger build, but equally prefer muscled to not muscled.

56% of men would prefer to be slim to "average," but well muscled. More men would prefer to be thin and unmuscular than larger and heavily muscled.

So the conclusion here would be that men's preferences for themselves aren't in line with what women prefer. It also appears to be a myth that men are more concerned with gaining muscle than they are with losing weight, and all your comments back that up, too.

More men answered the poll on women's bodies than they did on men's bodies, which probably means that men are a lot more focused on women's bodies than on their own. But this is no surprise...

Very interesting... would be great to get a larger sampling of women. Kind of cool survey.

Yes, that's the problem with doing a poll on a site where the men outnumber the women.
