The Crickets' Trill
The shade this evening is
Cooling sad Phnom Penh.
Within a red gold temple,
Buddha’s incense burns-
Coiling reincarnation breath,
Blessings left by barefoot monks.

Three singers sway past
In finely woven purple silk,
Just as green willows will.
Float upon the warm winds -
Their voices, lift- shrill birds
Flightless, unrestrained - pure -

Earlier, you shed your Ao tu than
It slid down your skin like rain
Cascading, forgotten in moments
You unwound the Khan Ä‘ong,
Uncoiled it from your scalp-
Long black snakes, your hair.

Crawled upon hidden ground
Later - shimmed over my chest -
I grew bold, clutched strands…
And ending, smoothness clasped.
We pause to hear the crickets trill,
Shy amidst the banyan groves.

We clung, two shameless mantras,
Our glance towards the drifting
Flock of clouds- nimble & languid.
Your embrace the wholeness of it-
(so plaintive) Softly, like a red
Papaya’s skin, the night peels back.

Scented like jack-fruit, foam wet
Primrose night fades eggshell blue.
Darker flocks of islands silently
Nestled amidst the silver seas,
Drift below regal silken pillows-
Shifting past your August Moon.

I love that Asian sense of composition where something is off the page and you fill it in with your mind's eye.

I used to work with a boy of Chinese heritage who was a big fan of catching and raising crickets. Funny the poem (creation process) didn't make me think of him but your post did.

A very nice kid.
