Way too much hate and anger and little on solutions.
Much too much of it.

Yip. For the most part you've nailed it, spot on! I don't seem to linger long in places, or with folk, who indulge in ego stroking ... Especially their own.
Yep!

Not that I study this stuff for a living or anything , but social media, like any communication media, is what people make of it.

computer based social media is just that, media. Like TV or newspaper, it is both entertainment and information, this is not a dichotomy. Media is always value neutral, it's what people do with that matters. There have always been bullies and altruists it's just that we can see a lot of stuff in our social network that used to be invisible.

A lot of people write a lot of blather about how computer based social media is the death of everything from civility to interpersonal communication to community engagement.

Bullshit.

It's not the death of any of those things any more than the television, telephone or the alphabet was and they were *all* alleged by their critics to have hastened the disintegrated the social fabric.

This is all because people are terrified of change. Those angry voices and pin headed blatherings were always there, we just can't deny then now. We've always selected media that matched our worldview, the paper that most closely matched our political beliefs, the community and friends that (we thought) most closely matched our moral and ethical frameworks.

Computer based social media has pretty much blown the lid off of that. Now we're finding out that our best friend is against abortion and our aunt and uncle think animals have the same rights as people. People 40 and over are getting a shock in terms of how little they know the people they thought they knew.

My dissertation is on online communities and what people lose sight of is how computer based social media dramatically broadened the opportunities to the disadvantaged.

The American Civil Right movement would not have happened without TV and movements such as Black Lives Matter and Why I Stayed would never have broken into the social consciousness. People who flee cults and deal with conditions and illness have places to go where they can share information and social support. So yes, social media can be an echo chamber but we sometimes lose sight of the fact that a lot of those echose are pretty good.

Interesting... you don't see it as giving ignorance greater reach?

Interesting... you don't see it as giving ignorance greater reach?

I think there are undeniable issues around persistence of communication as well as the size of the audience, but the benefit of this media far outweighs the negative aspects.

Stupidity and ignorance (which is often ideas that disagree with our worldview) have always been there. People who hold these beliefs have been having these conversations. Th difference is that in the past 10 -15 years, this sort of thing isn't so invisible anymore.

it's a new type of media and each now type of media extend our capacity to communicate in some way. However, my epistemological position is that these changes have happened before, they will happen again when the next new media comes along.

FWIW, you could plug in "television" everywhere you have social media and you are making the verbatim argument that people made about TV 55 years ago.

I will ponder what you have laid out. Television did have to be careful about being somewhat factual. Social media (Twitter, FB, Instagram) does not.
