What Do You Think....

about all these people on the radio and TV shows telling people what they should be thankful for and that you should be thankful/grateful for this or that...

I heard a piece or two of a radio program talking about how people should be grateful for this or that etc. I found it somewhat irritating in the way the parts that I heard were going. I think thankful is a more appropriate word for thanksgiving then grateful.

Maybe it is just semantics but grateful is slightly different than thankful to me.

What do you think?

Grateful: feeling or showing an appreciation of kindness

Thankful: pleased and relieved

They are synonyms but do mean slightly different things. Kinda more about context than semantics.

I've been thinking about this lately.

I'll use a different phrase that we hear everyday, all year round. "Have a nice day.". .. Person to person it's ok. But when someone on the Radio or Television tells me that I feel like yelling back "DON'T TELL ME WHAT KIND OF DAY TO HAVE!" .. Of course they don't hear me when I yell at the TV.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

Ah but context is part of semantics. But it was the way they were using the words and the context of the conversation that I found annoying. Have a nice day...

I agree with you; grateful suggests that people are servile!

That's exactly the feeling I got with they way they were using the word on the radio show and it was annoying. They sounded pathetic.

grateful feels slightly different than thankful but they are synonymous.

I don't pay attention to what people on TV and radio say I "should" do,

I listen and consider what they are saying but still do what I think is right or feel the way I feel not the way they are talking about how I ought to feel or be.

I will admit I didn't hear the whole story but they were making it sound as though people should be groveling sniveling grateful creatures for everything they have to some higher power or something. That's not to say that people shouldn't be aware of how fortunate they are but to make it sound like you owe it to someone or something struck me wrong and irritated me.

Sounds very different to me, I don't like it!

I didn't like the sound of it at least not the way they were using the words on the radio show. Sounded way to subservient.

Doesn't Thankful sound like it refers to a God, or Fate... or something?

Where Grateful sounds like it refers more to a person.

That's pretty much the way I feel about the words.

And Gratesgiving just doesn't do it for me.
