When Worlds..
Collide.

I saw that movie today, or most of it anyway, (I kind of dozed off somewhere along the way for about 40 minutes or so). This movie was from 1951 before the advent of manned space missions. A whole different era of movie making and acting.

Basically though it was an end of the world scenario. Someone discovered a star/sun with a planet orbiting that was on a collision course or near collision course (I may have dozed off a few times) with the earth. So they went about letting the world know which of course was met with disbelief etc. Then they and other countries went about building some space ships to ferry a few select people to the new planet before the earth was destroyed. Of course they had to get money to build the ship for the people the movie was concentrating on. Two sponsors were wealthy older gents who were glad to give the needed funds and were not interested in going then the third guy was a not so nice older guy in a wheel chair who wanted to go and wouldn't give any funding unless he could pick all the people to go on the ship. However the scientist type person in charge wouldn't give in to his demands and told him he could provide funding and go or not and not go, so of course he gave in and provided the funds.

Of course towards the end before the launch things got a bit chaotic.

So my question is, if this type event was to be discovered a year before the event was to occur and it was going to mean the end of the earth would you want to know about it or would you prefer the information was not released to the general public? Or would you prefer to know and the general public didn't?...

What would you do with the time you had left if you chose to know?

The pictures are from the movie release images. The last or second one is from the planet they landed on. Looks as though they aren't the first creatures to be there.

I wouldn't want to know till the last week.
I wouldn't want to know until the last month.
I would want to know as soon as possible.
I would like to know but would prefer the general public didn't know.

It is a difficult choice and works on your desire to know as well as your guilt about not sharing that information with others whose lives are going to be destroyed.

Does it make you wonder about what choices the government might make about telling people. It would be a hard thing to keep secret except by eliminating the "extras" that might leak the knowledge before they had a chance. But even then the people that know are likely to leak to their loved ones who would leak to their loved ones and friends... Given the available means to spread information via the internet and cell phones, and the speed with which it can be done. It could get interesting, but how hard would it be to discredit leaks, given the history of doomsday events and everyone's tendency to disbelieve the wild stories?

I think I would want to know but would prefer not to have the rest of the world knowing the secret. But would I want to tell my loved ones and friends?

 I voted that I would want to know but now i'm rethinking it.

if everyone knew, the chaos would be unfathomable so that would suck.
but I would hate to waste time doing mundane things.

I would want to be somewhere beautiful when it happened with the people I love. so yes, I guess I would need to know. but how oculd I know and not allow that same comfort to others?

It is a difficult choice to make isn't it. I would want to know myself but wouldn't want the rest of the world to know for the same reasons you said. Selfish reasons but then again is it really selfish to spare everyone the anguish and ugliness that they would experience if the rest of the world knew. The most difficult choices being the ones close to you, to tell or not? And you know what happens with secrets once you share them...

I have to wonder if the government might just let the secret out but assure the people that they had a plan to divert or otherwise save the earth even though they couldn't do anything that would make any difference.

I think I would like to know but I don't think I would want the rest of the world to know because I do believe it would be a hell of a mess. But how to keep that secret from the people you care about....

It would be a difficult secret to keep the lid on now wouldn't it? Do you think the government might just lead the people to believe that they were going to try and divert the catastrophe and that there was a very good chance of success even though they knew there was nothing to be done?

If it were general knowledge, how many people would continue to go to work? . I think there would be world chaos. ( even worse than if Trump ever serves a second term )

I'm not sure what I'd do.

Mortgage my home for as much as I can. ( it's paid off ) so I could still live here but have extra money. ( that's always handy )

But what I'd do with the money?

Travel around some, maybe.
I'd rent a high class hooker every once in awhile? . ( not enough time to find a true love... but having some end-of-the-world sex would be nice ).

I really don't know...

It is a difficult issue to consider. Your plan would depend on other people not knowing of course as money and property would have very little value once everyone knew. And once everyone knows there is a very good chance that things would get very ugly.

 My thought is the amount of money that is spent at stargazing and the thinking that the planet earth as we know it could be saved by an anomaly or asteroid on a collision course with our planet.

The end of the world is the thought behind the deficit spending of many politicians in this and other countries.. "We won't have to pay it back" for their pet projects if the world ends.

Most of us when possible borrow now to enjoy payback later, never know

There do seem to be a lot of politicians that are happy to spend the future generations earnings before they have even earned it but then again that's the way it works for some expenses. They could be a bit more responsible about the things that receive funding though.

It seems people have been expecting or counting on the end of the world for a very long time.
