I'm Afraid of Flying

[This really happened]

I have a friend that owns an airplane. She flew her airplane from California to Oklahoma to visit. I won't say that her name is Ann or her screen name is unicornann to protect her privacy.

Saturday afternoon Ann was telling my daugher, Sara, about her airplane. Sara asked if she explore "Aunt Ann's" airplane. Sara is blind and explores with her hands. So we went to the airport where Ann's plane was parked.

Ann took Sara around the outside of her airplane showed all her all the things to inspect before taking off. Then we went inside the airplane and Ann let Sara explore. After a few minutes Ann put Sara in the pilot's seat and adjusted the seat so Sara could reach the pedals. Ann told Sara what the pedals are for and put Sara's hands on the wheel. "Pull back to go up and push forward to go down,," Ann said. Ann sat in the right seat next to Sara.

Then Ann not only explained how to start the engines, but put Sara's hand on the button and switches to start the engines. "Everybody buckle up when the engines are running," Ann said.

Ann helped Sara put on her seat belt. I'm thinking we're not going anywhere so I didn't put on my seat belt. Ann put a headset on Sara an showed her a button on the wheel. "Push the button and said 'November (number) taxi to runway 36." Sara said it and the airplane starting moving.

I'm afraid of flying. Now I'm in an airplane that's moving. Sara wanted to go faster. Ann told her, "Not yet."

We drove (taxied) past a lot of airplanes then Ann told Sara "push hard with your right foot." The airplane turned left. "Push yout toes on the top of the pedals as hard as you can." The airplane stopped as Ann pulled some controls between the seats where she and Sara were setting.

Sara asked, "Can we go fast now?"

Ann put Sara's right hand on some contols between the seats then looked at me and said, "You really need to put on your seat belt."

"Ready?" Ann asked Sara. "Push the radio button and say 'November (number) ready for takeoff." Sara pushed the button and said it into her headset.

Ann told Sara to push the contols forward push on the left peddle. We turned on the runway and started getting faster.

"Let's go faster," Sara said.

"As fast as you want, Sara. Push the handles as far forward as they'll go." Ann answered.

Ann glanced at me and ordered, "PUT ON YOUR SEATBELT!"

The airplane kept getting faster.

After a few seconds Ann told Sara, "Pull back on the wheel."

The airplane left the ground.

"Are we flying?" Sara asked.

"You're the pilot," Ann answered. "You're flying us."

A whistle went off. "Push forward until the whistle goes off," Ann calmly told Sara.

My blind daugter flew us around for about 30 minutes. Did I mention I'm afraid of flying.

Sara can't stop talking about flying Ann's airplane. I can't believe my blind got me in an airplane and actually went flying.

I'm not as naive as I used to be.
