Slow and Steady

Why are spiritual practices such as meditation, yoga, and contemplation important when purifying your heart? I think a great illustration of this principle is the symbolism provided in the movie Shawshank Redemption.

The movie begins with the main character, Andy Dufresne, being wrongfully accused of a crime and imprisoned. This is a mirror of how all of the spiritual scriptures describe the human predicament, one in which it is our birthright to be free, yet we become imprisoned in the world of limited understanding. Spiritual sages have described earthly life as a “prison for the soul”.

Along the way, friends and enemies help and harm Andy, as is the case in all of our lives. Some who appear outwardly to be the most pious are in fact the worst scoundrels (the warden), while many of the convicted felons are impressively pure of heart. A great example of the spiritual law “you can’t judge a book by its cover”. One of the reasons I enjoy this site, I think there are many great people that are also impressively pure of heart on this site looking for fun and excitement and not embarrassed to pursue it.

In the end, Andy wins the prize of great freedom, and even brings a friend along to share the blessing. How did Andy attain this freedom? The answer is an excellent comparison for how we can make it to the spiritual and inner freedom…through the power of focused, dedicated, patient, and steady practice.
What helped Andy attain freedom was his long-term vision. Long-term vision, and the patience that comes with it, are necessary for spiritual progress. Most of Andy’s efforts during those decades of prison did not produce any immediate fruit, nor was there any guarantee of success in the future. Yet, he persevered. He quietly and steadily planted the seeds that would lead to his eventual liberation. Every night for year after year, Andy chipped away at the wall with his little chisel tool, until finally he broke through and was “resurrected” and reborn in a new life of freedom and joy.
Andy’s efforts are similar to spiritual practices. Not only do practices lead us toward the long term goals of enlightenment and spiritual liberation, they also keep us in a more positive frame of mind during our journey.

As I pick up the pieces of a broken and shattered life, the movie and the character Andy have taken on a whole new meaning. In my new life, instead of being focused on the material things, and making all of my practices focused on achieving those things, I am living a simpler life, with my focus and practice of meditation and yoga centered on gaining an understanding of what is really important and working (all be it very slowly) towards a stage of enlightenment. You’re welcome to come along for the ride.
